Stop 5: Sayre Heron Rookery

Directions: Exit I-40 at U.S. 283 South and turn left at the second crossover. The rookery is located on the east side of 283, and an unpaved road allows car access onto the property.

The rookery is home to several thousand Cattle Egrets, with good numbers of Little Blue Herons as well. This is a premier site to photograph young birds at close range. If you enter the stand of trees where most of the nests are located, be sure to wear a hat! The rookery is also a good place to look for butterflies and dragonflies in summer: sulphurs, hairstreaks, and wood-nymphs abound here. The rookery is unique because it affords birders and wildlife watchers a chance to view large numbers of breeding birds. This is an excellent site for school field trips.
